SIALKOT-The Customs Department has planned crackdowns on goods transporters promoting smuggling of various items from neighbouring countries to Gujranwala Division.

Its officials said that there were hundreds of goods transporters who were involved in smuggling goods therefore it was not possible for the Customs Department to check the menace at once.

The Customs Department officials believe the good transporters and forwarders were directly or indirectly involved in the smuggling of the auto parts, computer parts, clothes, tyres of different vehicles, tea, mobile phones, LCDs, LEDs from Afghanistan, India and China to Sialkot, Narowal, Gujrat, Mandi Bahauddin, Hafizabad and Gujranwala districts.

The officials, requesting anonymity, revealed that the goods transporters supply the smuggled goods to the local markets in the region, causing the big financial loss to the government. They said that the Customs Department has established several checking teams and anti-smuggling squad to check these goods transports.

They said that the swoop has become vital now to curb the smuggling of goods to the local markets.

Gepco has purchased 600 electrical transformers worth Rs270 million for providing improved and uninterrupted supply of electricity to all the domestic, commercial and industrial connections. The senior Gepco officials added that the installation of these new transformers has been started at various important spots.

WHILE-COAT CEREMONY: An annual “White-Coat Ceremony” was held at Kh Muhammad Safdar Medical College (KMSMC) Sialkot to welcome the newly enrolled medical students.

Addressing the participants, Principal Kh Muhammad Safdar Medical College (KMSMC) Dr Zafar Ali urged the students to utilise their full energy to serve the ailing humanity. He added that Allah has selected them for the noble cause of serving the ailing humanity. He said that the medical is a sacred profession. A large number of parents of the students and their teachers were also present.

VISIT: Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi will visit Sialkot today (Monday). Mayor Ch Tauheed Akhtar told the newsmen that the PM would discuss the matters of mutual interest with Sialkot exporters during a meeting scheduled to be held at Sialkot Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI).

During his visit to Sialkot, the prime minister would address a meeting of the local parliamentarians and PML-N office-bearers at the residence of Khawaja Asif, the federal minister for foreign affairs, at Sialkot Cantt.

He said that a warm welcome would be accorded to the prime minister upon his arrival at Sialkot International Airport as the PM would also visit Sialkot airport. The giant welcoming colourful boards and banners have been displayed at Sialkot city’s all the main roads, important chowks and important public places.
