Sit-in continues in UoP for 13th consecutive day

PESHAWAR - Students continued their sit-in for the 13th consecutive day on Sunday to press the administration of the University of Peshawar for meeting their demands, vowed to continue their protest despite harsh-cold weather.

Since November 28, students of the UoP affiliated with various students organizations had set up a sit in camp in front of the administration block of the university demanding decrease in fees and ensuring facilities to the students of the varsity.

The protesting students were of the view that majority of the students are unable to bear such huge increase in different fees, thus, in the best interest of the students the decision of increase in fees should be taken back.

To resolve the issue, the university management and representatives of the students who were protesting under the banner of Muttahida Talba Mahaz has so far held a few joint meetings and even one in the presence of KP Minister for Higher Education Mushtaq Ahmad Khan, but to no avail.

The students alleged that the recent 10 per cent increase in all fees, admission charges and hostel accommodation fee are beyond to be paid by poor students and that’s one of the major demands, saying, the UoP’s administration doesn’t not look to take their demands seriously.

The sudden increase in hostel accommodation charges, administration fee and in supplementary examinations fee and verifying of documents charges are unacceptable to them, they said this while talking to this scribe adding their protest and sit in would continue until meeting their demands.

They said that in a recent meeting the UoP had announced that the decision of increase in fee had been revised, however, the student leaders said that they wanted that these commitments should be issued in written otherwise they would continue the ongoing sit in.
