In an interview to The Atlantic, outgoing US ambassador to United Nations Nikki Haley reiterated the stand of Trump administration over Pakistan and said that it does not deserve even a dollar from the US unless it stops harbouring and sponsoring terrorism.
Talking about relations between foreign assistance that the United States gives to countries with those countries’ voting patterns at the United Nations, Nikki said, "President Trump does not want to continue aid to countries, who don’t serve USA’s interests."
“Look at Pakistan,” Nikki said. “Giving them over a billion dollars, and they continue to harbour terrorists that turn around and kill our soldiers.
"That’s never okay.
"We shouldn’t even give them a dollar until they correct it.
“We shouldn’t even give them a dollar until they correct it. Use the billion dollars. That’s not a small amount of change,” she added.
Trump administration has repeatedly alleged Pakistan of harbouring terrorists on its soil and assaulting US military and other countries.
Recently, friction between two nations had led the Pentagon to severe monetary help of $1.66 billion in security assistance to Pakistan. The decision had come days after Trump’s statements slamming Pakistan of not doing ‘a damn thing’ for the US, alleging that its government had helped Al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden to hide near its garrison city of Abbottabad. The USA also alleges that Pakistan plays a double role while dealing with the Afghan Taliban.
The USA has always alleged that Pakistan acts as a voluntary host for Taliban insurgents and have turned a blind eye towards the Haqqani network, active on Pakistan and Afghanistan’s shared borders.
US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis had advised Pakistan that it should support peace initiatives of Indian Prime Minister Modi and the UN to maintain peace in south-east Asia.
This was in relation to letter the US had written to Pakistan soliciting its support for negotiating talks with the Afghan Taliban.
In a recent interview with The Washington Post, Prime Minister Imran Khan dismissed US’ allegations that there were safe havens for terrorists in Pakistan.
Imran Khan also said that he would never want to have relations with the US where Pakistan is treated like a "hired gun".
Nikki Haley is the US ambassador to UN ’till January. She has earlier served as the governor of South Carolina. She announced resignation in October. She is a popular Republican politician, with speculations that she will run for Presidency of the USA in 2020.
