One wonders what prompted the Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif to float the theme of introducing 'same uniform for students of all government and private colleges in Punjab. Besides, it is not an idea but an actual 'directive whose strict implementation has also been desired. The decision was taken in a high-level meeting attended by top officials of the Ministry of Education, Chairman Planning & Development and a number of MPAs. From the reports appearing in the press, it is not clear what type of dress he wants introduced. If he means to dress up all college students in one kind of uniform or in one colour like the schoolboys, that would not be practical. The college students are not kids; they are grown-up young men and women who would not want to be treated such. Secondly, every college has its own traditional colour that adorns the blazer, neckties, sportswear and caps of the college which distinguishes its students from others. The college colour, and the college emblem that is usually incorporated in the clothing, is both a source of inspiration as well as pride. As an old Ravian, I feel that if the students of the GC University are directed to discard their maroon blazer in favour of some 'officially-imposed colour and apparel by the CMs committee, the move would cause a big revol. The existing institutional colours and clothing have a sentimental value for the students. I am sure a monochromatic change in this would provoke a bitter reaction among students of other colleges of the province also. Since such a change has no effect on the promotion of education, I suggest the CM should drop the idea and withdraw the directive. -RAFI NASIM, Lahore, February 8.
