Islamabad - The department of Urdu, Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU), will conduct a PhD level research on the life of the leading Urdu Writer Intizar Hussain to promote academic knowledge of the students about the people who achieved distinction in their respective fields.

Two research scholars at MPhil level have already been engaged in research on his columns. It is the duty of educational institutions to keep those remembered who delivered the best in their respective field, stated the Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Shahid Siddiqui while speaking at the condolence reference held here at AIOU to pay glowing tributes to late Intizar Hussain for his valuable and impressive role as a fiction writer.

He noted that Intizar Hussain was a great person and always had smile on his face and top of that a best human-being. He had his own unique way of writing which made him different from others. He wrote short stories, novels and poetry in Urdu, and also columns for newspapers. He had the command over the English and Urdu languages. Intizar Hussain was widely recognised as one of the greatest Urdu writers in history, Dr Shahid Siddiqui said.

Dr Siddiqui said, “Intizar Hussain was a man of letters. His death has left a huge gap in the literary circle of the subcontinent that would be felt of the centuries to come.” He will be remembered long for his literary work, he added. He was a towering personality in fiction writing field who had been working with dignity and grace throughout her life.

The function was arranged by AIOU in connection with its new series ‘Mat Samjo Hum Nay Bhula Diya.’ The speakers included Chairman Department of Urdu, IIUI, Dr Kamran Kazmi, Chairman, Department of Urdu, AIOU, Prof Dr Abdul Aziz Sahir and others well known literary figures.

Meanwhile, scholars, writers and literary figures highly appreciated the government’s decision of introducing “Intizar Hussain Literary Award” here yesterday.

Prominent literary personalities including Chairman Pakistan Television Ata ul Haq Qasmi, Kishwar Naheed, Fateh Muhammad Malik, Prof Jaleel Aali, Prof Dr Ihsan Akbar, Director General National Language Promotion Department, Prof Qaisra Alvi, Managing Director National Book Foundation (NBF) Prof Dr Inam ul Haq Javeid, President Sukhnawar Literary Society Aftaz Zia, Manzar Naqvi, Iqbal Hussain Afkar, Chairman PAL Prof Dr Muhammad Qasim Bughio and Director General PAL Dr Rashid Hameed have welcomed the decision of government to introduce Intizar Hussain Literary Award.

They said that this award would not only encourage the literary people but also play a very vital role in the promotion of literature in the country. They highly eulogized the decision of the government, saying that Intizar Hussain was a very prominent literary figure of sub-continent and he really deserves this kind of Award.

The writers and scholars said that the announcement of Intizar Hussain Literary Award would benefit the literary community, beside encouraging them to contribute and make efforts for achieving such a high profile Literary Award.

They also lauded the services of Advisor to Prime Minister on National History and Literary Heritage Irfan Siddiqui, saying that the creation of new Division specifically for the promotion of country literature is one of the good initiative by the government.
