PESHAWAR  - Four days anti-polio campaign will begin tomorrow in Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) and Frontier Regions (FR).

In the campaign starting from January 11, 2016, children of below the age of five years will be vaccinated up till January 14, 2016.

In polio high risk areas, including Khyber Agency (Jamrud & Bara), South Waziristan, North Waziristan Agency and FR Bannu (Baka Khail, Jani Khail, Hindi Khail and Sintanga), children will be vaccinated for seven days.

FATA Secretariat Officials with support of UNICEF, WHO and BMGF has prepared 3371 teams comprising 2980 mobile teams, 297 fixed teams and 94 transit teams, who will administer anti-polio drops to 1004807 children in FATA and FRs.

Political agents, commissioners, para military and military forces will be providing security to safeguard the campaign areas.

Last year only 16 polio cases surfaced in FATA and FRs: one polio case in North Waziristan, two in South Waziristan, two in FR Peshawar and 11 in Khyber Agency). Whereas, polio affected tehsils were brought down to eight tehsils only. Rate of refusals in FATA and FRs remained below 2 per cent, however, number of children missed due to none availability at home was comparatively higher throughout the year.

ACS FATA Mohammad Aslam Qamboa, in a recently held polio program review meeting, appreciated the EOC FATA team, UN partners, agency surgeons and political administration over substantial reduction in polio cases and improving the quality of anti-polio campaigns, and advised to continue working hard to achieve the program goals.
