A labourer was killed while three others sustained injuries when the roof of an under-construction house collapsed in Nishtar Colony Wednesday. Police said labourers were busy with their work when the tragedy took place. Rescuers reached the spot and pulled out the labourers from the debris.  One of them, Arshid Mehmood, died on the spot while Naveed, Wasim and Sabir were injured.  Meanwhile, the Punjab Emergency Service provided emergency services to 551 victims  of 743 accidents in the province during the last 24 hours. The statistics show that 198 accidents were reported in Lahore with 193 victims, 63 in Faisalabad with 76 injured and 56 in Multan with 69 victims.–APP


Gang smashed

Investigation Police PS Ravi Road smashed a thief gang and arrested its two members besides recovering items and illegal weapons from their possession. SP City Investigation Syed Iqrar Hussain Shah constituted a special police team which conducted a raid at Ravi Road area and arrested Shakeel alias Kana, ringleader of the gang and his accomplice Abbas. The team also recovered Rs 100,000, three motorcycles and two pistols. During interrogation, the gangsters confessed 13 incidents committed in various places of the city.–APP


Seminar on influenza

Speakers at a seminar have laid stress on precaution, early diagnosis and proper treatment for avoiding influenza-related causalities. Post Graduate Medical Institute Principal Prof Ghiasun Nabi Tayyab was the chief guest at the seminar arranged at Lahore General Hospital on Wednesday. Experts delivered lectures on causes, preventive measures and benefit of early diagnosis and treatment in saving precious human lives.  Prof Ghiasun Nabi said doctors and paramedics at influenza wards have been vaccinated and provided necessary safety gears for safe handling of patients. “I will personally monitor the service delivery at specified wards”, he said.  Prof Khalid Waheed, Director Research Ghazala Roohi and Dr Razi Rizwi said that influenza was an epidemic which could easily spread through sneezing, body touch. –Staff Reporter

The 28th annual international medical conference FamilyCon will start at a local hotel on Friday (tomorrow).
