Hangu jirga opens talks to defuse crisis

HANGU - Hangu Peace Jirga initiated efforts on Thursday to find out solution to the crisis erupted with the ongoing hostilities between the security forces and the militants. "A six-member committee has been constituted for talks with Taliban," District Nazim Haji Khan Afzal told media. He said that with hectic efforts of the elders and ulema, the two sides have agreed to hold talks. The six-member committee includes Mufti Deen Azhar, Haji Gul Karim, MPA Said Janan, Maulana Sefat Ullah, Hussain Jalali and Maulana Tehseen Ullah. Haji Khan Afzal also told that the jirga would go to Aurakzai Agency where Taliban leaders were sheltering. In response to a question, the District Nazim could not tell the exact number of the officials or personnel of the security forces made hostages by the militants. Similarly, he was unaware of exact figures of the arrested militants. Meanwhile, the authorities told the Jirga that Taliban must set all the hostages free and guarantee that they would remain loyal to law of the land. Meanwhile, amidst conflicting claims of arrests and hostages from security forces and alleged Taliban, there existed curfew like situation all over the Hangu Thursday. The security forces made a big achievement on the midnight between Wednesday and Thursday when they with the help of traditional tribal jirga forced the militants to bring an end to the siege of Police Station Dawaba. Later, they claimed embarking on a drive against the Taliban militants residing in the area. Maulvi Omar, Tehrik-e-Taliban spokesman talking to the media  claimed that while bringing an end to the siege, Taliban picked around 27 personnel. However, the officials while contradicting the claim informed that they apprehended around 20 militants and demolished several houses. On the other hand, the police authorities in Hangu claimed that they have arrested 20 militants, thus raising the strength of the arrested persons to 27 in the last two days.
