A number of top-ranking retired federal government officers applied to the former Chief Minister Punjab for life-time financial help out of the Punjab budget. The latter granted it despite opposition from certain quarters. Obviously, the number of these beneficiaries will continue to increase with the passage of time thus increasing financial burden on the poorest of the poor in Punjab who pay taxes. Being the new custodian of the poor taxpayers money, it is now the legal and administrative responsibility of Chief Minister Mian Shahbaz Sharif to examine the legality of life-time financial help for federal officers out of the Punjab provincial budget. He also has to ascertain the value of the assets in the names of these officers and their family members to determine the level of their poverty. -CH. GHIJLAM HUSSAIN, Islamabad, July 10.
