LAHORE - Pakistan lost 0-2 to Philippines on the opening day of the Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Group-II second round tie that began at Manila on Friday. Without having the services of the country's top player Aisamul Haq, Pakistan lost the opening two singles matches of the tie to Philippines easily. Aqeel Khan, Pakistan's second best player after Aisam, lost to Treat Huey with little resistance and his brother Jalil Khan lost the other match. Huey got the first set in an almost one-sided contest against Aqeel and had to fight a bit to win the second set but the last and third set proved a piece of cake for him in which Aqeel conceded points after points. The score was 6-4, 7-5, 6-2 giving Philippines a 1-0 lead in the tie. In the other singles match, Cecil Mamiit defeated Jalil Khan in straight sets. Mamiit games proved too superior to Jalil who lost the match 6-1, 6-2, 6-1, giving Philippines a strong footing in the tie with 2-0 lead. The side will meet today in doubles match today and later there will be reverse singles.
