KARACHI - A federal anti-corruption court on Thursday granted bail to Pakistan People’s Party leader Makhdoom Amin Fahim in the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) corruption case.

The court also extended the bail of former Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gillani. Amin Fahim and Gillani appeared in the court on Thursday. A large number of People’s Party workers and members of Sarwari Jamaat also accompanied them.

Earlier, the Sindh High Court (SHC) had restrained the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) from arresting former commerce minister Amin Fahim.

The cases against Fahim, another PPP leader and some former and serving senior officials of TDAP were registered by the FIA for their alleged involvement in approving and disbursing fraudulent trade subsidies of millions of rupees to several ‘fake’ companies through fictitious claims and backdated cheques.

Last year, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif referred the scam of Rs 1.27 billion to FIA to collect evidence and initiate criminal proceedings against the officials, exporters and companies involved in it. The FIA booked 45 men for their alleged involvement in the scam since the beginning of the probe. Moreover, arrest warrants were also issued against Fahim and Yousuf Raza Gilani in relation to the scam.
