LAHORE - Like other parts of the globe, World Population Day will be observed across the country including Lahore today (Saturday) for raising awareness of global population issues. WPD theme this year is “Vulnerable Populations in Emergencies”.

Variety of activities and events will be arranged to draw attention of people to work together on the issues of growing population. Some of the activities include seminars, walks, poster distribution, sports activity, speeches, artwork and round table discussions.

The event was established by the Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme in 1989. It was inspired by the public interest in Five Billion Day on July 11, 1987-approximately the date on which the world's population reached five billion people.

In her message on WPD, Minister for Population Welfare Begum Zakia Shahnawaz stressed the need for a balance between resources and growth of population for achieving progress and prosperity.

She said that Pakistan’s population has increased six times since creation and is the 6th biggest country with regard to population. She said that large portion of the Pakistan’s population was living below the poverty line and a woman dies every 20 minutes due to complication in pregnancy.

She said that government was promoting public awareness regarding problems created by rapidly increasing population. She said that illiteracy, desire for maximum children especially of male children were the reasons for increasing population.
