LAHORE - Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar Sunday observed that he would not accept any post after his retirement.
“I’ll not accept any post after my retirement, I advise to everyone,” the top court remarked while hearing the case of non-payment to cane growers at the Supreme Court Lahore registry.
He directed the sugar mills owners to pay dues to the cane growers within two days. “We paid Rs 20 billion and some farmers didn’t come to get their amounts,” said a man representing the mill owners. At this, the CJP directed that “establish a separate account for outstanding dues for the farmers and those who could not come pay them from there,”. “Give the growers their right,” he further remarked.
He also regretted over the poor conditions of public schools in Baluchistan. He said that over 6,000 schools in Baluchistan didn’t have walls, water and toilets.
“What’s wrong in it if I visit hospitals for the better of the public,” the CJ P observed. He said the Constitution and the law were supreme and the top court has the right of judicial review.
Taking up the private medical colleges’ hospitals cases, the Supreme Court gave three days to the health ministry to issue notification. The top court also gave two days to the UHS to display merit lists. “We can’t bear delay in the matter of students,” the CJP remarked. In a separate case about the air pollution, the Supreme Court directed to make public the report submitted by the Smog commission.
“Make the report public through the print media, upload it on the SC’s website and the website of the environment agency so that the suggestions could come for its enforcement,” the CJP observed. “We can’t afford smog in the coming December,” he further remarked.
Earlier, the Chief Justice of Pakistan appreciated Dr. Hassan Pervez for his report and observed that “ he would like to call him Baba”.
In another case, the Supreme Court summoned PIA MD and Station Manager of Islamabad airport over the rain water apparently accumulated nearby the newly constructed airport in Islamabad.
The CJP regretted over the authenticity of the social media that it seems that campaigns were being run from across the border. “State institutions are under attack through the social media being handled from abroad,” the CJP remarked.
Later he visited Allama Iqbal Medical College and removed its principal from the office. “I visited the hospital personally and the situation was quite bad,” the CJP observed.
“How Rashid Zia was appointed as the principal of the college?” the CJP questioned the chief secretary present in the court. The top court directed the Chief Secretary to constitute a new search committee for appointment of a principal of the college. The court also dismissed application moved by Mayo Hospital Chief Executive Officer Professor Asad Aslam.
He pleaded the court that permanent vice chancellor was not being appointed with King Edward Medical University. On it, the bench observed that the search committee made the decision on merit so no interference could be made.
The top judge also paid visit to the Fountain House, a non-governmental institute of mental heath, along with her daughter and donated Rs. 100000 to the institution.
CJP Nisar announced to provide bangles and perfumes to all female patients as eid gifts at the facility.
He visited different wards and inquired after the patients. When asked, a female patient demanded bangles and perfume from CJP. On it, the CJP asked his daughter to arrange and provide bangles and perfume to all female patients. Another female patient told the CJP that she would return home by June 30. On this occasion, CJP prayed for earlier recovery of all patients and their return to their home.
Expressing satisfaction over the facilities being provided to patients, CJP said we should take care of our patients. CJP also hinted at spending Eid day with Fountain house patients.
Earlier, while hearing a suo motu notice on non-payment of salaries to the media employees, the CJP summoned several media organizations’ owners for Monday (today).
The top judge expressed anger over non-payment of salaries to journalists and media workers.
He directed the media houses to pay salaries to the media workers before Eid, observing that otherwise the court would take up the case on Chand Raat and Eid as well.
“We can arrange loans for you if you can’t pay them their salaries, he remarked.
