LAHORE There has been mixed reaction from former cricket greats on the life ban, probation and fine imposed on the leading cricketers of the national team over discipline. Former captain Zaheer Abbas termed the action a bold decision and said it would end players power in the team. Players power was affecting teams performance badly. There was no discipline in the team and it had become impossible for the board to tackle the players. That was why the board has been budging down to players pressure, he said. A brave step: Qadir Former PCB Chief Selector and leg-spin wizard Abdul Qadir also termed the move a brave step. Its a good decision and will go a long way to arrest the continuing decline of Pakistan cricket and improve the state of cricket in Pakistan besides improving the discipline, he said. A poor decision: Inzamam Former Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq said senior players Mohammad Yousuf and Younus Khan, who have been barred by the PCB for an indefinite period, should approach court challenging the decision. Younus and Yousuf should go to court to challenge the decision, Inzamam said. Inzamam also feels that by imposing a one-year ban on former skipper Shoaib Malik and Rana Naved-ul Hasan, Pakistan Cricket Board has set a bad precedent before the young players. This is not a good decision for Pakistan cricket. The board is not setting a good example before young cricketers. I dont understand the thinking that led the board to take such a decision. What sort of message are we delivering to the world by taking such decisions at a time when nobody is agreeing to come to Pakistan to play cricket? he asked. Too harsh a decision: Tauqir Zia Former PCB chairman Lt Gen (retd) Tauqir Zia has expressed his surprise over the life ban decision taken by the board against Yousuf and Younus. He said that it was too harsh and the board should make it clear weather it was match-fixing or something else. Cricket is their livelihood and the board cannot snatch their right from them. I think they would go to the court and everything will be overturned, he added. PCB finds scapegoats for mismanagement: Rashid Latif Former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif felt the Boards move would further hit the image of Pakistan cricket. Latif questioned the timing of the action and felt the Board may have done it to save its own skin. He also suggested players to knock the judicial doors, challenging the punishment, and was confident that aggrieved players would come out victorious. Younus I think has been treated unfairly for long now, what was his fault and yet he is banned for life. This is not the way to improve things in Pakistan cricket. If things were so wrong in Australia then what was the team management doing. I am getting a feeling that the board has taken these decisions to save themselves after the recent poor performances and controversies, he said. You cant hand out such severe punishments to players of the calibre of Yousuf and Younus Khan, Latif said.
