GUJRAT - The by-election for PP-111 Gujrat took a dramatic turn on Wednesday after Defence Minister Chaudhry Ahmed Mukhtar announced to support the PML-N candidate against his rival belonging to the PML-Q. At a joint news conference with the PML-N Gujrat chapter leadership, the federal minister along with his supporters announced to vote for the PML-N candidate, Haji Imran Zafar. Mukhtar said in compliance of the prime ministers orders, he had talked to the Punjab chief minister to assure him of his partys backing. We had supported the PML-N in the 2008 general elections and would repeat the same unconditionally in PP-111 by-poll. I do not want the PML-N to start a blame game after the elections; therefore, I will initiate a door-to-door campaign at the union council level with the PML-N leaders, said the minister. Speaking on the occasion, PML-N Gujrat President Malik Hanif Awan said both the parties should work together while keeping in mind the Charter of Democracy. He said the PML-N and the PPP were working jointly in the by-polls, as the PML-Qs tenure of suppression had ended. Hanif said the people of Gujrat had taken a sigh of relief after the PML-Q lost the 2008 elections and it would meet the same fate on March 24.
