ISLAMABAD Chairman National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Naveed Ahsan has gone on a long leave handing over the reins of the department to Pakistan Peoples Party-appointed Deputy Chairman Irfan Nadeem. Sources in National Accountability Bureau informed TheNation that Chairman NAB Naveed Ahsan had tendered his resignation during his meeting with Prime Minister Gilani last month but on latters request carried on his duties till the appointment of the new Chairman NAB. The sources further informed that Naveed was a man of impeccable character and had a clean track record throughout his long service career and now when serious doubts were raised on his person, he thought it better to walk away. The sources informed that Chairman NAB wanted to go by the book and reopen the cases withdrawn under NRO including the Swiss cases against President Asif Ali Zardari but when he realised that it would not be possible for him to play his due role while remaining within the incumbent set-up, he decided to detach himself for the whole affair. In his written request for long leave, Naveed said that he had already tendered his resignation on February 24 to Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani but was asked by the PM to continue till the appointment of his successor. But now it would not be possible for him to continue with his responsibilities anymore and requested for grant of long leave. Before leaving the office, Naveed also took his senior staffers into confidence.
