At least 14 people were killed and two dozen others injured in a blast during funeral prayer near Peshawar on Sunday, police said.

According to police, funeral prayer of wife of Imdad Khan, local Aman Lashkar commander was being offered when a powerful bomb blast believed a suicide attack took place. Some 150 people were attending the funeral.

Police and bomb disposal squad was investigating nature of the blast however they said it could be a suicide blast, police also found two hand grenades and other ammunition nearby Mama Khel graveyard.

Deputy Speaker Khyber Pakhtunkhwa assembly Khushdil Khan escaped as he left the prayer place minutes before the blast occurred.

Peshawar Police Chief Imtiaz Altaf said the deputy speaker was the apparent target of the blast.

Police and Aman Lashkar volunteers rushed to the scene soon after the blast happened, while wounded and dead bodies were shifted to Lady Reading Hospital where emergency was declared after the blast.

People shifted injured in private vehicles and even on motor bikes before the ambulances reached at spot.

Many injured reported in critical condition which feared rise in dead toll, medical official of Lady Reading Hospital told the media.

Witnesses said that several vehicles were also destroyed in the attack.

Police said that the attack could also be reaction to the security forces operation in Khyber agency.

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani condemned the blast and lost of precious lives.

Interior minister Rehman Malik taking notice of the incident asked immediate inquiry report.

No group claimed responsibility for the blast.

The area is famous for anti-Taliban 'Lashkar' or volunteers, who support the security forces against the militants. It was not clear if any leader of the peace committee was attending the funeral who are routinely targeted by the militants.

It is second blast in the same area in less than two months.

On February 2, a car bomb in a busy market in Badabher killed at least nine people, including children and 24 others were injured. Badabher is located near Khyber tribal region.

There had also been Taliban attacks on the security forces and pro-government peace committee members in the area in the past.

Besides Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, another militant group Lashkar-e-Islam is also active in the same region and routinely launch attacks on security forces.
