LAKKI MARWAT - Residents of Tarikhel and Behramkhel villages blocked the Indus Highway at Malang Adda on Saturday to record their protest against the suspension of power supply for the last several days.

Hundreds of protesters reached Malang Adda in vehicles where they staged a sit in on the main highway connecting KPK with the other three provinces. The highway closed for half an hour causing problems for transporters and commuters. The closure of the highway caused queuing up of hundreds of passenger and good transportation vehicles on both sides of the road. Heavy contingent of police force rushed to the place to avert happening of untoward incident and open the road for traffic.

Haji Salim Tarikhel and other elders said on the occasion that the villages were without the electricity facility for the last several days as wires of transmission line had been stolen by unknown thieves. They said that the villagers lodged complaints with relevant quarters to repair the transmission line and restore electricity supply but in vain. “The electricity suspension has added to the miseries of the residents of both villages especially women, children and students”, they maintained. They told that both villages were under the tight grip of water shortage as tube wells could not run because of power suspension.

They said that negligence and lack of interest on part of officials concerned compelled the residents to launch protest and close the highway for diverting the attention of higher quarters to resolve the problem.

SDPO Sanaullah Khan held successful talks with the elders and assured them that electricity supply to the villages would be restored till Monday besides the district police would launch a crackdown on wire thieves. The protesters later dispersed peacefully and opened the highway for vehicular traffic.
