ISLAMABAD  - Terming ‘un-Islamic’ the clause of seeking prior permission for second marriage from the first wife , the Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) has allowed men to tie a second knot without seeking permission from his existing wife .
A meeting of CII , the supreme institution to interpret the social and religion-specific laws, was held here on Monday under the chair of Moulana Mohammad Khan Sheerani, who is also central leader of Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (Fazl).
The meeting reviewed the Muslim Family Laws Ordinance 1961 at length and concluded that mandatory consent of first wife for second marriage was against the Islamic injections and it allowed the Muslim men to go for another marriage , if he requires so, without the prior permission of his existing wife(s).
“Under Shariah a man is not bound to seek approval for second marriage from the first wife ,” declared Maulana Sheerani. However, according to Shariah, a man is bound to treat all his spouses with justice and equity, he added.
