LAHORE - Many parts of the provincial metropolis yesterday witnessed worst traffic mess as police blocked some busy roads after a protest rally appeared on The Mall.

Traders shut their business shortly after club-wielding religious activists marched on The Mall in the afternoon. The rally was organized by a religious party to protest against the execution of Mumtaz Qadri, a cop hanged to death last month for killing Punjab governor Salman Taseer.

The policemen suspended the flow of traffic by placing roadblocks on different parts of The Mall. The protesters marched to Regal Chowk from Nasir Bagh. Earlier, the protesters gathered at the Data Darbar. Traders closed their shops to avoid damage.

Police stopped traffic from moving to The Mall and the wardens diverted the traffic to alternative routes, causing traffic jumbles in the areas of Civil Lines, Garhi Shahu, Racecourse, Qila Gujjar Singh, Lower Mall, Samanabad and Mozang.

Also, commuters on Ferozpur Road, Jail Road, Canal Road, and Davis Road got stuck in traffic mess. An ambulance was also stuck near PTV building. Motorists and traders heaved a sigh of relief in the evening as police cleared the movement of traffic. Religious activists however, dispersed peacefully after hours-long protest on the busiest road.
