Islamabad - Department of Public Administration of Fatima Jinnah Women University in collaboration with the Ministry of Human Rights has organised a seminar titled “Human Rights, Education and Sensitisation” yesterday.

Muhammad Arshad, Director General (HR) Ministry of Human Rights , was the chief guest while other speakers of the seminar were Zulfiqar, Director Human Resource Ministry of Human Rights , Kashif Kamal, Director Helpline Ministry of Human Rights , Rukhsana Omer, Assistant Director (HR) Ministry of Human Rights , Dean Faculty of Law, Commerce, Management and Administrative Sciences Prof Dr Azhra and Chairperson Department of Public Administration Prof Dr Najib Ullah.

Addressing the students and faculty members, Director Human Resource Ministry of Human Rights Zufiqar highlighted the objectives of the seminar, saying the event was aimed to develop understanding and identify the critical factors influencing human rights . He further said this would provide the platform to students, faculty members, researchers and practitioners to address the key issues of human rights . “We have to sensitise our youth about human rights as well as about the upcoming challenges of human rights specific to our country and region,” he added.

Muhammad Arshad in his address said that human rights were a collective responsibility of the society. He said now days human rights’ violations were quite visible. However, he said individual access to the system to address and solve their grievances was limited mainly due to lack of information regarding their rights. He further said that Constitution of Pakistan and relevant laws as well as various conventions of human rights of which Pakistan was signatory have a variety of provisions but the only need is to sensitise and train our masses specifically the youth of Pakistan. Arshad also introduced the internship programme of Ministry of Human Rights and urged the students of FJWU to join the programme so that they could equip themselves with the market experience.

Prof Dr Azhra said that the FJWU was playing very important role to sensitise and train young women of Pakistan. She further said the FJWU have introduced relevant subjects at both bachelor and master level to acquaint the students on human and various other rights. She thanked the Ministry of Human Rights on its initiative to conduct such seminars at FJWU.

The panel discussion session was also the part of the seminar. The panellists of the discussion session were Director (HR) Ministry of Human Rights Zulfiqar, who discussed the Human Rights : Prospects and Challenges, Kashif Kamal, Director (Helpline) Ministry of Human Rights , highlighted the National and International Obligations related to Human Rights , Monina Yousaf, Assistant Professor, Public Administration Department (FJWU), shed light on Role of Academia, Media and Civil Society Networks for Promotion of Human Rights , while Muhammad Arshad, Director General (HR) Ministry of Human Rights , talked on Achievements and Future Actions to Improve the Situation of Human Rights in Pakistan. The panel session was followed by Question and Answer session from the students and faculty members. The moderator of the panel discussion was Zulfiqar Ali.

In his concluding remarks Prof Dr. Najeeb Ullah Khan said that sensitisation of our youth on Human Rights is very important. He further elaborated that such seminars will increase the understandings and awareness among the students and young women about their roles and responsibilities to tackle the subject issues both in their personal and professional lives.
