ISLAMABAD Besides arch-rivals India, Hong Kong, Thailand, Afghanistan and Iraq have confirmed their participation in the 9th Asian Baseball Championship which gets underway from May 18 here at Jinnah Stadium, Pakistan Sports Complex. An official of the Pakistan Baseball Federation (PBF) told TheNation Monday that five nations had sent their entries by names to hosts. However, Sri Lanka and Iran have yet to send their entries for the regional baseball event. Sri Lanka and Iran will also take part in the event but we are awaiting the final list of their players and officials. The matches will be played at Jinnah Stadium, Pakistan Sports Complex under the lights, he asserted. Responding to a question, he said that the arrangements had been given final touches and it would be a top notch international event especially when international teams refuse to come to Pakistan after Lahore incident in which terrorists hit the Sri Lankan cricket team bus on March 3, 2009. We will provide fully security to our visitors, he viewed. He said that the PBF had an international standard baseball ground in the premises of Pakistan Sports Complex which would also be used for international matches and practice sessions during the eight-nation baseball event. This will be an exciting sports event for the sports lovers of twin cities Rawalpindi and Islamabad, he said. The PBF had hosted a similar event three years back at the Pindi Cricket Stadium and Pakistan had claimed top position in the international fixture. This time the green shirts will produce good results as the lads are getting hectic training from a foreign coach at Pakistan Sports Complex, he hoped.
