LAHORE - The government of Punjab has announced summer vacation in schools from May 17.

Provincial Education Minister Rana Mashhood Ali Khan said on Thursday that schools would reopen on August 10.

Addressing a news conference at the Punjab Curriculum and Text Book Board, the minister said the decision was made in view of the holy month of Ramazan. He said that private schools will also observe the vacation schedule. However, he said, schools can open for examinations or summer camps, without demanding extra fee from students.

The education department has forwarded a circular to CEOs of district education authorities on summer vacation. The secretary for schools has directed school managements to give summer home work before vacation begins. He said that printed copies will be provided to students for homework.

He also stressed that private schools would not collect lump sum fee from students for three months of summer vacation.

However, some private schools owners rejected the government announcement about early summer vacation, saying that Education Secretary Dr Allah Bakhsh Malik should honour the promise he made with the private schools association.
