LAHORE The Pakistan Railways is all set to resume Shalimar Express, about one and half year after its operation was suspended by the then PR management. The utility on July 27, 2010 had suspended the Express due to the financial problems. Sources told TheNation that the Shalimar Express would be back on track from January next year. The train would be operational between Karachi and Lahore with private sector investment, they added. The annual expenditure of the Shalimar Express when it was suspended about 16 months before was Rs 300 million against Rs528 million earning. But the then PR management had decided to close its operation because of overall cash constraints and they even not bothered to calculate the trains earning and expenditure. Not only this, but the then rail authorities on the same month (July, 2010) had also closed Mehran Express, Sialkot Express, Tezrao Express, Chiltan Express and a passenger train. It was being said that the financial problems coupled with mismanagement and shortages of locomotives have paved the way for closure of the important trains operation. The PR on the same dates also suspended the operation of 76 other trains. Among these 76 trains which had been closed one after the other were including eight mail/express, 16 inter-cities and 52 passenger trains. Since last two years, the PR due to the unavailability of engines is in a practice of suspending more than 100 trains on different routes on daily basis. The sources said that Railways Chairman Javed Iqbal and General Manager Saeed Akhtar since the holding of their charges had been interacting with various private companies to woo them for investment in the rail. The new agreement for revival of Shalimar Express has been signed with a private company Air Rail Service and under the agreement the company would give Rs 510 million annual earning to the PR, they added. According to the sources, the train would comprise seven economy, two lower-Ac and one parlor coach. It is worth mentioning here that an agreement has already been signed with a private company to run a business train between Lahore and Karachi. The new business train is also expected to come at route from January next year.
