KARACHI - Federal Information Minister and PPP Information Secretary Qamar Zaman Kaira has alleged that the mandate of PPP was stolen through rigging in 1990 elections, while Nawaz Sharif’s then government was bogus, which must be declared null and void.

Addressing a press conference at the media cell of the ruling PPP Sindh chapter near Bilawal House on Saturday, he said PML-N leadership was still supporting extremist forces and ideology of Taliban in the country. Flanked by Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Memon and other party leaders, he said Nawaz Sharif was now talking about the money distributed for toppling his government in 1993, but the nation knew who had got money in 1990.

The information minister said that PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif was allegedly being funded by Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden to topple the PPP government in 1990. He was also involved in getting money to make Islami Jamhori Ittehad (IJI) to steal the mandate of PPP, Kaira added.

When his attention was drawn towards the statement of Nawaz Sharif, demanding the government announce schedule for general elections, he dispelled the impression of the delay or postponement of the elections and said that the elections would be held on time. The information minister said the PML-N was now confused as its elders were afraid of going for next elections without the help of the secret agencies and other forces.

He said that the anti-democratic forces had initiated an advertisement campaign and launched movements under fake names of the organizations, including Tehreek-e-Tahaffuz-e-Pakistan to defeat PPP and stop the party from coming to power. All the elections had been rigged against PPP, he claimed.

Nawaz Sharif was the first to raise the slogan of ‘Jaag Punjabi Jaag’ when PPP bagged majority votes in the 1988 general elections, Kaira pointed out.

He said it had been proven in the Supreme Court verdict in Asghar Khan case that the Nawaz Sharif government in 1990 had lost its constitutional and legal status for using millions of fake identity cards against the PPP in 1988 and 1990. He further said it was Nawaz Sharif who issued a licence to Younis Habib’s Mehran Bank to operate in the country.

Talking about the international day of Malala Yousafzai, Kaira said she had become a symbol for an enlightened and moderate Pakistan. She was a courageous, fearless and enlightened girl who was the face of Pakistan and the hope for a faltering nation.

He added no political worker or .leader was jailed during the tenure of PPP government in the last four years while reconciliation policy would continue for all political parties.

To a question, the Federal minister said all the conspirators behind the assassination of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto had been arrested except one who was absconding while another mastermind of the attack had been killed in a drone attack.

He added Bilawal Bhutto Zaradari and President Asif Ali Zardari were satisfied with the investigations into Shaheed Benazir Bhutto’s assassination case.
