LAHORE - The protest sit-in of young doctors and nurses outside Chief Minister’s Secretariat continued for the third day yesterday, causing worst traffic mess on The Mall and adjoining roads.

The healthcare providers continued strike at OPD and Emergency of Mayo Hospital besides denying treatment indoors, causing huge inconvenience to patients. Apathy of doctors caused death of 18 month old Sana at burn unit. The ill fated kid was brought to the hospital after she sustained serious burns from hot tea at her house in China Scheme. Instead of treating the little girl, the doctors suggested the family to take her to the venue of doctors’ sit in.

Denying treatment at the biggest hospital in the city caused patients to either go to other public sector or private hospital or go back home with the hope that the strike would end on the coming day.

Led by YDA Mayo Hospital Chapter president Dr Shaharyar, the protesting doctors continued their sit-in outside the Chief Minister’s Secretariat, demanding restoration of colleagues suspended for torturing a patient and his attendants. Carrying placards and banners inscribed with demands, the protestors chanted slogans against the government.

Blockage of The Mall outside CM Secretariat caused worst traffic mess in the heart of the city from the noon to till late night. Police diverted traffic coming from canal to Sir Agha Road and that from Faisal Chowk to Aiwan-e-Tajarat Road, causing extra ordinary rush on nearby arteries.

YDA has vowed to continue strike at OPD of Mayo Hospital and protest on The Mall till acceptance of all demands.

Meanwhile, a clash between doctors and security guards led to closure of Emergency of Lahore General Hospital for hours, causing huge inconvenience to visiting patients and their attendants.

The quarrel started when a doctor slapped a security guard in the parking of LGH. In retaliation, the security guards thrashed duty doctors. Protesting against the ill treatment of colleagues, young doctors stopped treating patients at the Emergency.
