Acting Afghanistan FM arrives in Islamabad to join Troika plus meeting

ISLAMABAD - Pakistan will host Troika Plus meeting on Afghanistan today as Pakistan, China, the United States, Russia and Afghanistan discuss stability in the war-torn country.

The special representatives and envoys for Afghanistan from China, Russian Federation, United States and Pakistan will participate in the Troika Plus meeting which will be inaugurated by Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi.

“Pakistan attaches high importance to the Troika Plus mechanism on the situation in Afghanistan. Pakistan hopes that deliberations of the Troika Plus meeting would contribute to the ongoing efforts for achieving lasting peace and stability in Afghanistan,” the foreign ministry said ahead of the meeting.

Acting Foreign Minister of Afghanistan Amir Khan Muttaqi is already in Islamabad for talks with the Pakistani leaders. He is leading a high-level ministerial delegation to Pakistan. The Afghan FM will also participate in the Troika Plus meeting.

The key meeting will be attended by Pakistan’s Special Representative for Afghanistan Ambassador Mohammad Sadiq, the State Department’s Special Representative and Deputy Assistant Secretary for Afghanistan Thomas West, Russia’s special envoy for Afghanistan Zamir Kabulov, and Chinese special envoy for Afghanistan, Yue Xiaoyong.

China, Russia, Pakistan and the US have major stakes in bringing peace to Afghanistan. These countries have long been active participants in the Afghan peace talks.
