What is the difference between democracy and dictatorship? I do not find any in Pakistan. Yes, there is a difference between a military and a civilian dictator. The former wears a uniform and the latter does not (but is actually more despotic than the one in uniform). Under the garb of 'democracy', our civilian rulers have been no better than Napoleon. Pakistan is moving towards such a predicament. May Allah save us from rulers who have ruined the poor in a matter of the past few months. Our much-touted 'democracy' works in such a way that the opposition, both at centre as well as in provinces, is transformed into coalition partners. -G. OMAR, Peshawar, via e-mail, September 26.
