This is apropos an article by Air Marshal (Retd) Ayaz Ahmed Khan "PAF - New Challenges", which appeared in The Nation (October 08, 2008). The contents of the article reflect an in-depth knowledge and information about PAF in particular and Defence related issues in general, yet the recommendations made towards the end, for PAF to shoot down the intruding drones and gunship helicopters, are inappropriate as such an action would lead to an all out war. While the armed forces remain ever vigilant and operationally ready to defend the territorial integrity of the Motherland, the prerogative of exercising military option rests with the government. Needless to say that it is not a decision taken in isolation by any one service, be it Army, Navy or Air Force. It has to be desired by the nation as a whole and directed by the government to initiate either a limited, or full-scale, military conflict. -SULTAN M. HALI, Islamabad, October 10.
