Rawalpindi - Every 8th women is vulnerable to breast cancer , said experts in a seminar held at Holy Family Hospital yesterday.

The event was presided over by Prof Muhammad Umar, Principal Rawalpindi Medical College, and attended by Medical Superintendent HFH Dr Shafique Sarwar, Prof Dr Jahangir Sarwar, Dr Usman Qureshi, Prof Ajmal, Prof Shaguffta Siyal, Dr Jahangir Minhas, Prof Lubna Ejaz, Dr Faryal, Prof Mati Ullah, medical officers, nursing and paramedical staff.

Addressing the seminar, Prof Umar said that diseases and knowledge have no boundaries and keeping in view the prevailing situation of new epidemics and other complicated diseases, it is imperative to develop new specialties in the hospitals with the objectives to provide best medical treatment facilities to the patients.

He lauded the efforts of Prof Jahangir Sarwar Khan and his teammates for establishing a dedicated centre for extending breast cancer diagnoses and treatment facilities with complete privacy.

He also mentioned that trained lady doctors in this centre are becoming very helpful for extending treatment facilities to breast cancer patients who hesitate to get themselves examined from male doctors due to social taboos.

Prof Janagir Sarwar Khan was of the view that early diagnosis could prevent 90 per cent women from breast cancer and it was a social stigma that women do not take seriously any kind of abnormality in their breast and always avoid to consult doctors.

He said self-examination of chest could avert the danger of breast cancer . Prof Jahangir Sarwar said that women could consult lady doctors of surgical one unit in HFH every Wednesday in case they feel any abnormality in their chest. He said breast cancer awareness programmes also continued for health education and public awareness.

Dr Faryal presented audit report of breast cancer clinic surgical unit # 1 after completion of one year and informed that 1,202 women were examined out of which 138 cases of breast cancer were found positive. He said breast cancer patients feel no hesitation to get their medical check-up in breast cancer clinic of HFH free of cost.
