Indian student sets herself on fire after harassment by teacher

A class 9 student of a prestigious school in Gonda set herself ablaze after being fed up with harassment by her teacher.

The victim was admitted to a local hospital with serious burn injuries from where she was referred to the civil hospital, Lucknow. The student succumbed to her injuries here.

There are reports that the teacher had befriended the student through Facebook after faking his identity. As their virtual friendship grew, the student one day discovered that the person she had befriended on Facebook was none other than her teacher.

That’s when she reportedly stopped talking, an act which allegedly got the suspected angry. The teacher then started resorting to eve teasing, which finally is believed to have driven the student to suicide. There are reports that the teacher had even started blackmailing her saying that if she continued to ignore him, he would fail her in the examination.

Gonda police station incharge Abhay Pratap Mull said that no report was registered with them. “If the family gives a complaint we will act,” he told reporters in Gonda. Police said that at around noon, the victim had just returned home from school on her father’s scooter.

As soon as her father left for some work, she set herself ablaze after pouring kerosene on herself. She was severely burnt by the time neighbours and family could rescue her. As her condition worsened, she was referred to Lucknow’s Civil Hospital where she finally succumbed.
