ISLAMABAD - The Employees Welfare Association of Quaid-i-Azam University (QAU) has appealed to the president, who is Chancellor of the university, to intervene into the issue of shifting of the university administration in new block to avoid any confronting situation between the university authorities and employees. A meeting of EWA was also held in this connection on September 7 wherein the association had rejected the decision of transferring the administration into newly constructed Administration Block (Joint Academic Block), which according to them, would cause hurdles in routine matters of the university. The members of the association are of the view that as only one month has been left in the expiry of the contract of the vice-chancellor so he should not take future decisions regarding the administration of the university and it should be left for the new vice-chancellor to decide. The employees fear that the transfer of administration block would cause difficulties as it is situated two kilometer away from the university campus and officers of the administration have declared it security risk for the degrees and the university record. Far away from the university bank, nearly two kilometer, the Joint Academic Block would create problems for the students, employees, teaching faculty and people who come for admission if the administration of the university is shifted in it. The employees also alleged that the vice-chancellor has been doing this to save his skin in front of Planning Commission as the commission in a report had revealed that all the development funds released to the university in 2008-09 remained unspent by the end of December 2008. And the commission decided not to consider new projects from the university saying it lacks the capacity to utilise development funds. Its pertinent to mention that a meeting of the Deans of the Faculties of Biological, Social and Natural Sciences was also held on June 6, 2009 to consider the requests of Department of Administrative Sciences and Centre of Excellence in Gender Studies regarding allocation of space in newly constructed Administration Block. Due to the acute shortage of space being faced by the two departments the deans suggested to allocate the whole first floor of new block to the department of Administrative Sciences to mitigate its current shortage of space as well as for the future expansion of the department. It was also decided that the Centre of Excellence in Gender Studies might also be allocated space as per their current requirement on the ground floor of the Joint Academic Block in the near future. But the decision has not been implemented yet instead the administration is being shifted forcefully in the new block, which could cause an untoward situation as the university has been imposing the decision against the wishes of the administration employees, the employees said. Sources told TheNation that the university authorities have planned to shift the administrative work to new block on Saturday, which can lead to a confronting situation and it might turn violent.
