Azad Jammu & Kashmir Accountability Bureau has arrested a senior clerk of Mirpur Development Authority on the charges of corruption, malpractices and irregularities while the MDA staff went on a pen-down strike against the arrest.

Shaheen Akram was nabbed late Monday by a raiding team for his alleged involvement in preparation of files of fake allotment of a plot in a local housing sector. According to the preliminary investigation, the single plot was allotted to two applicants in two different occasions following the fake entries by the accused a few months ago. However, the then director general of the MDA had cancelled the fake allotment of the plot.

The accused was shifted to the local police station soon after his arrest and further investigations are in progress. Meanwhile, the employees of the MDA Tuesday went on indefinite pen-down strike to protest against the arrest.

In response to the call of the MDA Employees Union, the protesters locked their offices and staged a sit-in in front of the MDA offices complex to register their resentment against the action.

Describing the action as inappropriate, the furious employees demanded immediate release of the arrested and withdrawal of the case registered against him. A spokesman of the MDA Employees Union told newsmen that the issue of the preparation of double allotment of one plot has been settled after the cancellation of one of the allotments of the plot besides withdrawal of the case from a higher court. Therefore, there was no justification of the action against the clerk, whom the spokesman described innocent.
