PESHAWAR - Pakistan Tehrik-e-insaf Chairman Imran Khan on Tuesday advised the provincial government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to tax Nato supply, impose strict financial discipline and explore new revenue generation avenues. “This province has a lot of potentials that should be explored and exploited for the benefit of people,” this he stated during a briefing by the Additional Chief Secretary Finance to Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in Peshawar. Provincial ministers, chief secretary and others attended the briefing. He said that for good governance and efficient services in all social sectors, it is imperative to tax the untaxed avenues.

He said that financial health of the province is poor and so is the economic situation, therefore, the provincial government should take steps for the revenue generation so that the province could stand on its own feet.

He said that the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was facing the multifaceted challenges and these challenges could be tackled through a matching will and response, adding the local government system to be introduced in the province would lead to the empowerment of people at grass root level. The local government system depend on a strong and sound local taxation system therefore, the need is to expand the areas of taxation which is a practice in vogue all over the world where they collect their taxes through an efficient system and spend them on the public welfare.

He said the provincial government should have an efficient mechanism for a devolved taxation system, which will automatically enhance revenue. Under the devolution plan all districts would get their due share in the development process and the surplus employees of the over staffed departments would be transferred to the local government system.

Imran was of the view that the NATO supply and other tax collection avenues should be supervised and strictly monitored that will indicate how much improvement the system has and how much revenue the system can generate. The NATO supply is damaging the road communication infrastructure in the province and taxing it would generate resources, which could be spent on the rehabilitation of road communication.

Imran said that the province has the potential to cut down its deficits. Its leadership should stand for the rights of the province and focus on resource generation. There are all the reasons that the province would overcome all the challenges.
