WASHINGTON - Shooting that prompted a lockdown of the US Capitol, the seat of Congress, Saturday was a suicide, a police spokeswoman said.
“Confirmed: ?self-inflicted gunshot by neutralised subject,” the spokeswoman said. “Multiple law enforcement/emergency services have responded in support of the incident.”
The building was locked down as a precaution after shots were fired on the west front of the building, she said. The lockdown continued even after the incident was described as a suicide.
US Capitol police officers also were investigating a suspicious package on the lower west terrace of the Capitol, the spokeswoman said. No one was allowed to enter or exit the Capitol building or the Capitol Visitors Center during the lockdown.
