LAHORE – Jamaat-e-Islami and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf have agreed to launch joint protest movement for the ouster of prime minister if the government shows reluctance to form judicial commission according to their demand on Panama Leaks issue.

In first phase, both parties decided to take on board all opposition parties in parliament to start a powerful movement against the government. The political parties outside the parliament could also be requested to be part of the movement in second phase.

“We have advised Imran Khan not to make solo flight on Panama Leaks issue. So far both parties agreed to launch protest movement for the resignation of prime minister and against prevailing corruption in rulers’ ranks,” JI spokesman Ameerul Azeem told The Nation.

The Jamaat-e-Islami has already started a “corruption free movement” and considered the recent scenario a “golden opportunity” to grab the countrywide public opinion in its favour. The JI is also part of Milli Yakjehti Council, an alliance of around one dozen religious parties. Most of them are furious over government’s “pro-secular” moves. The possibilities of religious parties particularly representing Brelivi and Shia schools of thought to be the part of the movement could not be ruled out. Leaders of Pakistan Awami Tehreek and Majlis-e-Wahdatul Muslimeen, popular Shia party, have already expressed willingness to aggressively support anti-PML-N alliance. Pakistan Sunni Tehreek, Sunni Ittehad Council, Jamiat Ulam-e-Pakistan could also be the part of anti-Nawaz Sharif movement.

Ameerul Azeem, however, said that the JI was not in favour of besieging Raiwind (Sharif family residence in Lahore) and conveyed it to the PTI. He also ruled out the religious parties outside parliament could be invited to jump in protest on Panama Leak issue in first phase.

First of all, he said, the JI and PTI decided to contact opposition parties in parliament to be united against corruption then the other parties could be requested but it all depended on situation.

“If the government formed an independent judicial commission to investigate the Sharif Family involvement in tax evasion or hiding assets then there would be no need of protest on Panama Leaks issue,” he said, adding the JI, however, would continue its corruption free movement across the country.
