Male nurse rapes disabled girl at PIMS

I Accused still at large

Islamabad - A staffer at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) on last Saturday night allegedly raped a 22-year-old under-treatment disabled girl, lying on the bed of surgical Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital, the police said.

The alleged rapist, male nurse Krishan Kumar, is at large since the matter came to the notice of the hospital high-ups. However, Karachi Company police have booked him under section 376 PPC (FIR 114) and efforts were underway to arrest him. “Medical of the victim has been conducted which has confirmed the rape. Different teams have been constituted to arrest the accused,” said duty officer at the Karachi Company Police Station, Daood Sabir.

The victim girl (N), a resident of Topi tehsil of district Swabi, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, had been under treatment at the PIMS for the past two months, said the hospital sources. The accused has been suspended and an inquiry at the hospital level is also underway, a spokesman for PIMS said. The hospital management has constituted an inquiry committee consisting Dr Rauf Niazi, Dr Abid Farooqi and Dr Shazia Farooqi that will probe the issue and report within 48 hours.

On the other side, the administration of the hospital has different versions on the issue. According to the officials, it will be clear only after the examination whether the girl was raped or it was an attempt to rape. Father of the girl Said Gull in his application lodged with the PIMS hospital alleged that the male-nurse raped her daughter. The victim was initially treated at the Neurology Department of the hospital and for the last two months she was admitted to the surgical ICU of the hospital.

The hospital sources said that the father of the victim, who is a complainant in the case, has alleged that on-duty male nurse Krishan Kumar raped her daughter when nobody was around.

On the other hand, Capital Administration and Development Division authorities have also taken notice of the incident and ordered stern action against the alleged culprit.

Col Saif from PM Inspection Cell also met Vice Chancellor PIMS, Prof Javed Akram, and sought details of the incident. Kumar remained at large till filing of this report.

According to the sources, the suspect has a criminal record and about two years back, a colleague nurse had lodged a complaint at Margalla Police Station of having raped her.

But, the sources said, union members managed to reach an out-of-court settlement and he was released by the police. The hospital sources said such complaints about male-nurses are common but the complainants are always hushed up due to strong support of nursing union, said a female nurse requesting anonymity. The hospital has also appointed about 10 to 15 per cent male-nurses against a quota of 5 per cent, she said.
