Need of the hour

Your readers will be astonished to know that the Websters' New World College Dictionary published by Simon and Schuster, Inc, New York, on its page 1586 shows our K-2 and Nanga Parbat mountains to be in India. That this gross error has continued since its first publication in 1970 is no small matter. The irony is that none of our students, teachers, professors, academicians, diplomats and our press attaches abroad have bothered to point out this glaring folly to the publishers. Had there been any such misinterpretation against the interest of our eastern neighbor, I am sure all hell would have been let loose in no time. Like the Websters', the Encyclopedia American had also been incorrectly showing Mohenjo Daro and Harrapa - the 5000 BC remains of civilization- as parts of India. Luckily this anomaly has been set right in the recently published edition. The need of the hour is that we shun apathetic attitude in matters concerning Pakistan and ensure that even trivial things concerning our national interest are not misrepresented anywhere. -HABIBULLAH, Rawalpindi, via e-mail, July 28.
