Around 500 prisoners out of 80,000 would get relief from different jails across the country after remission announced by President Asif Ali Zardari on the advice of Prime Minister under the article 45 of the constitution in jail terms on the eve of 63rd Independence Day. Prisoners including those convicted for life imprisonment would be granted special remission in their sentence on Independence Day, said official sources here Wednesday. Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani had sent a summary to the President for grant of special remission in sentences of prisoners on Independence Day. According to official sources, the summary has recommended special remission of 90 days to the prisoners convicted for life imprisonment except those convicted for murder, espionage, anti-state activities, sectarianism, zina, robbery, kidnapping/abduction and terrorist acts. Special remission of 45 days has been recommended for all other convicts except the condemned prisoners and also except those convicted of murder, espionage, subversion, anti-state activities,terrorist acts, zina, kidnapping/abduction, robbery and dacoity as well those undergoing sentences under the Foreigners Act, 1946. These special remissions will be admissible only if the convicts have undergone 2/3rd of their substantive sentence of imprisonment. The summary has also recommended total remission to male prisoners who are 65 years of age or above and female prisoners who are 60 years of age or above and have at least served 1/3rd of their substantive sentence of imprisonment, except those involved in culpable homicide and those involved in terrorist acts. Special remission of one year has been recommended for female prisoners who have accompanying children and are serving sentence of imprisonment for crimes other than culpable homicide and those involved in terrorist acts. In addition, a total remission to juvenile convicts who have served 1/3rd of their substantive sentence has been recommended except those involved in culpable homicide, terrorist acts, zina, robbery, dacoity, and kidnapping/abduction and anti state activities.
