LAHORE – Twenty-hour hard work brings success to tandoor worker Muhammad Muhsen, who clinched the first position in the Punjab University’s Bachelor of Arts/Science (BA/BSc) annual examinations for 2012 by obtaining 688 out of 800 marks and setting a new record.
Belonging to the village of Mian Reheeman in Hafizabad, the son of a labourer works at a tandoor to make both ends meet. His father Nazeer Ahmed works in the fields while his mother Jannat Bibi is a housewife.
Sharing his feelings, the eldest among 11 children said: “I appeared in the examination as a private candidate because I could not afford college fee.”
Speaking about the fruit of hard work, he said: “I never slept more than four hours during my preparation for the examination.” Requesting for a scholarship, Muhsen said: “I want to do master’s in English but I cannot bear the expenses. I make a request to the Punjab government for providing me scholarship so that I can continue my studies.” He credited his parents with his success.
The proud parents, who came to Lahore to celebrate the success of their son, said: “Our son is our wealth. Today, our son made us proud. We are not only praying for the success of our son but for all the sons and daughters of our country.”
After the media aired the story of Muhsen’s success, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif announced bearing his academic expenses.
Tears of gratitude filled Mushen’s eyes when he came to know about the chief minister’s announcement. He thanked Shahbaz Sharif and expressed his resolve to achieve more distinctions.
