LAHORE - A 35-year-old motorcyclist was crushed to death under a truck in Shadbagh police area yesterday.

Investigators identified the victim as Muhammad Faisal. The truck driver Fayyaz was also arrested by police from the scene. 

An eyewitness said the motorcyclist was going toward a nearby market when a truck bumped into his two-wheeler. As a result, Faisal died on the spot. The police reached the spot and impounded the truck. Further investigations were underway.

5,000 security cops to be recruited

The provincial police department has proposed recruitment of 5000 security constables. The department has sent a summary to the provincial government for final approval, a police spokesperson said yesterday.

Punjab inspector general of police Mushtaq Ahmad Sukhera yesterday chaired a meeting at the central police office to discuss the recruitment and training process, provision of vehicles and security gears to the Special Protection Unit. The SPU is being established to ensure foolproof security for the foreign experts working on various development projects in Punjab.

Chief of the SPU, DIG Agha Yousuf briefed the IGP that recruitment process of 3338 security constables out of approved 4076 posts has been completed while the remaining 583 posts would be filled by 10th October this year.

A summary to recruit 5000 more security constables has been submitted to the government for approval. Whereas 264 drivers and 33 wireless operators are also hired for the SPU. Recruitment of 73 retired army personnel in SPU from head constables to inspector is already done.

The police chief was also informed that training of 3298 security constables is underway in four police training schools of the Punjab while training of the next batch will begin by the last week of October.

Meanwhile, the police chief approved one of the three samples as uniform designed for the SPU staff.
