ISLAMABAD - As 15th National Assembly is set to meet tomorrow (Monday), many bigwigs including one each former president, prime minister and chairman Senate besides three former NA speakers and six ex-provincial chief ministers are likely to take oath as members of the Lower House of the Parliament.

Though there are many new entrants in the Lower House of the Parliament with Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari is on the top of the list that are set to make their debut in parliament, many seasoned and senior politicians are also in the line to sit on the treasury and opposition benches of the National Assembly.

There are also many big guns of Pakistani politics that have remained part of the National Assembly for many tenures but this time lost the election with JUI-F Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman on the top of the list followed by PKMAP Chief Mahmood Khan Achakzai.

President Mamnnon Hussain has summoned the maiden session of the 15th National Assembly on August 13 (Monday).

Former President and Pakistan People’s Party Parliamentarians Chief Asif Zardari will step in the National Assembly after 25 years as last time he became member of the house in 1993. Asif Ali Zardari has served as the 11th President of Pakistan and stayed in office from 2008 to 2013. In the past, he has remained member of the National Assembly twice besides being a member of the Senate as well. He is the member-elect of the National Assembly from NA-213 (Shaheed Benazirabad-I).

Former Prime Minister and PPP leader Raja Pervaiz Ashraf will be another bigwig who is set to take oath on Monday. He got elected from his home constituency of Gujar Khan, NA-58 (Rawalpindi-II). Raja Pervaiz Ashraf got elected as prime minister in 2012 after the then prime minister Yousaf Raza Gilani was convicted by the Supreme Court in a contempt of court case.

Former Chairman Senate Mohammad Mian Soomro has won the National Assembly seat from NA-196, Jacobabad, Sindh on a PTI ticket. Soomro remained the Chairman Senate from 2003 to 2009 for two consecutive terms during Musharraf regime. He also remained the caretaker Prime Minister from 16 November 2007 to 25 March 2008 to oversee the 2008 General Elections.

Among the former speakers of the National Assembly; Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, Dr Fehmida Mirza and Syed Fakhr Imram are in the list who have made their way into the 15 National Assembly. Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, the incumbent Speaker of the National Assembly has won his National Assembly seats from NA-129 (Lahore VII) on a PML-N ticket. His predecessor, Dr Fehmida Mirza was the 18th Speaker of the NA Assembly from 2008 to 2013 during the tenure of the PPP government and this time she has won election from NA-230 (Badin-II) from a ticket of Sindh-based Grand Democratic Alliance (GDA).

Syed Fakhr Imam got elected from NA-150 (Khanewal-I) as an independent candidate and was the 11 Speaker of the National Assembly of Pakistan from 22 March 1985 to 26 May 1986.

Seven former chief ministers have also won seats of the National Assembly. The are Mian Shahbaz Sharif and Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi from Punjab; Aftab Shahban Mirani and Ali Muhammad Mahar from Sindh; Pervaiz Khattak and Ameer Haider Hoti from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Sardar Akhtar Mengal from Balochistan.

The president of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Shahbaz Sharif has won a seat of NA from Lahore. He has recently his third term as the chief minister Punjab. He had both elected as MNA and MPA in the July 25 election and has decided to retain his National Assembly seat.

The PML-Q chief Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi got elected two National Assembly and one provincial assembly seats but he has decided to retain his provincial assembly seat as Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has nominated him as the next speaker of the Punjab Assembly. He served as chief minister Punjab from 29 November 2002 to 18 November 2007.

Aftab Shahban Mirani has won a seat of National Assembly from NA-202 (Kamber Shahdadkot- I) on a PPP ticket. He had served as the 18th chief minister of Sindh in 1990. Ali Muhammad Khan Mahar has won NA seat from NA-205 (Ghotki-II) and has served as the chief minister of Sindh from 2002 to 2004.

PTI leader Pervaiz Khattak has recently served as the chief minister KP between 2013 to 2018 and got elected both as MNA and MPA from the province. He has decided to vacate his provincial assembly seat and will sit in the 15 National Assembly after taking oath. Ameer Haider Khan Hoti has won the NA seat from NA-21 (Mardan-II) on a ticket of Awami National Party. He was the chief minister KP between 2008 to 2013.

Akhtar Mengal , the chief of his own party—Balochistan National Party-Mengal (BNP-M), won the election from NA-269 (Khuzdar) and he served as the chief minister Balochistan between 1997 and 1998. He has also simultaneously won two seats, of National Assembly and Balochistan Assembly, and has still to decide whether to retain his NA or provincial assembly seat.
