Massacre in Kashmir

A report published on the international day of human rights states that during the past 22 years, 93,000 Kashmiris have been martyred by the Indian security forces while 10,000 have gone missing. This only shows the kind of atrocious rule with which New Delhi has been maintaining its illegal and unjust occupation of the Valley. The horrifying thing is that among those who have been killed are a fairly large number of women and children. The report also mentions cases of rape by Indian forces. The number, however, is even larger than 93,000 if one starts counting the death toll ever since Indias occupation after partition. Recently, the discovery of over 3,000 unmarked graves in north-western part of the Valley containing thousands of Kashmiris shocked everyone. The pity is that despite these killings the UN which has an obligation to support the Kashmiris in their struggle against India has stood as a silent spectators merely because of powerful Indian lobbies. India, with which the West wants to curry favour in order to strengthen economic ties, has successfully managed to avoid the deaths of Kashmiris being noticed. Even more shameful is that though resolutions were passed by the UNSC granting the people of the Valley the right to decide their fate through an impartial plebiscite, no international leaders have spoken of the cause. Where Pakistan never loses an opportunity to comment on the right of the Palestinian people to freedom, it is left alone when speaking of atrocities in Kashmir. President Obama also seems to have forgotten his promise to try to resolve the dispute in accordance with the wishes of the people. The blood of the people of the Valley will not go waste. India would have to sooner or later give the people their rights and end its occupation. The famous words of Indian Booker Prize winner Arundhati Roy that 'India needs Azadi from Kashmir and Kashmir from India are apt and New Delhi must mark them seriously.
