MIRPUR (AJK) - The AJK Excise & Taxation Department has started issuing computerised numberplates of vehicles.

Mirza Zulfiqar Ali, the commissioner income tax, excise and sales tax, inaugurated the drive at a ceremony held in the Inland Revenue Department. Zulfiqar was flanked by Additional Commissioner Asim Shoukat and Income Tax and E&ST Officer Mirza Tallat Mahmood.

Zulfiqar told the media that the project was initially launched by the department in 2000 which lasted for six years. But later it had to be abandon. The commissioner continued that after the requisite amendment in the rules concerned, the department had resumed issuance of computerised numberplates.

To a question, he said that displaying of computerised numberplate are allowed only. Asim said that special emphasis was being given to ensure security features. He said that commercial, private and government vehicles will carry three different colours - yellow, white and green - respectively.

To another question, the additional commissioner said that at the first leg of the plan, the computerised numberplates would be issued by the department’s offices in Mirpur and Muzaffarabad. Later, they would be issued by rest of the district offices of the department, he added.

He said that initially, a contract of 70,000 computerised registration numberplates has been awarded to a firm.
