ISLAMABAD - The Tourism Division of the Capital Development Authority (CDA) in collaboration with Ibex Club and Adventure Club has organised the climbing competition here at Lake View Park to mark the International Mountain Day.

On Tuesday, the International Mountain Day was celebrated across the world under the theme ‘Celebrating Mountain Life.’ The Sports Climbing Association supervised the competition.

Sports climbers including girls and boys of different educational initiations participated in the event titled Mountain Challenge, which started at Trail 5 at Margallah Hills. The event started at 8:30am and 30 teams (1 team of 10 members each) from various schools/ colleges participated in the event.

The competition, which was kicked off on December 10, was held under different age categories. Tough competitions among students were witnessed under 12, 15, and 18 categories.

Chairman CDA, Syed Tahir Shahbaz was the chief guest of the adventurous festivity, which was also attended by the Members of the CDA Board. Speaking on the occasion, Chairman CDA Syed Tahir Shahbaz said that day has provided an opportunity to highlight the importance of mountains in our life as well as the opportunities and resources blessed by the nature in form of these mountains.

The Chairman CDA and other dignitaries enjoyed the thrilling competitions and appreciated the performance of climbers. He also lauded the efforts of Adventure Club Pakistan to organise the competition successfully and promote the daring activity for the youth of the country. He also announced full support of CDA to help develop climbing sites and venues for the promotion of the activity. In the competition, Hanna Khan got the 1st, Aleeza Khan the 2nd whereas Maira Khan and Palwasha secured 3rd position.

Speaking on the occasion, Shahjahan congratulated and thanked Alpine Club for organising such event to celebrate International Mountains Day and hoped that both the organisations would continue their efforts to promote tourism and adventure sports in the country. He added that PTDC empathises on promoting and develop tourism; especially in mountain areas of Pakistan.

President Adventure Club Pakistan, Tahir Imran Khan congratulated all position holders and announced a 2-day complimentary training course and one month free climbing practice in climbing arena on behalf of Ibex Club. He further announced the holding of the next mega competition on International Women Day on March 8th as the club is organizing this event for last seven years since 2007. Every year International Mountain Day is being celebrated on 11th by organising various activities like hiking, climbing competitions, plantation etc as the UN General Assembly declared 11 December from 2002 onwards every year as International Mountain Day. This special UN Day serves to highlight the global importance of mountain ecosystems and to promote ongoing attention to the unique needs of mountain communities.
