SWAT - The people of Swat have welcomed the appointment of Ziauddin Yousafzai, father of peace icon Malala Yousafzai, as United Nations advisor on education, saying that it was a matter of pride for the area residents as well as the whole country.

They felt very proud when they heard the news of his appointment as a special UN adviser on education. The news of Ziauddin Yousafzai appointment spread in the valley just like a wildfire and the locals started discussing the issue. The locals said that this was another proof to the fact that Swat people were peaceful and peace-loving people.

Jamal Nasir Khan, a well-known person of the valley, told TheNation that anyone who works for the welfare of people deserved all the best. Usman Olasyar, member of Civil Society and Suvastu Art Cultural said it was a wonderful honour for Pakistan and especially for Swat.

Ziauddin has been assigned the task to assist in the work of getting every child to school by the end of 2015, an announcement early Monday morning said.

The statement issued with the appointment said: “Worldwide, 32 million girls are not at school. Yousafzai, a former teacher and principal, will play a critical role in helping remove the discrimination and barriers that prevent girls from going to school.”
