LAHORE - Pakistan Ulema Council’s executive committee has designated Hafiz Tahir Ashrafi as chairman of the council.

The council in a meeting here yesterday, nominated Zahid Mehmood Qasmi its secretary general, Maulana Abdul Kareem Vice-chairman, Maulana Ayub Safdar deputy secretary general, Maulana Abdul Hameed secretary foreign affairs and Talha Kashmiri finance secretary.

Addressing meeting, Hafiz Ashrafi said that the PUC was a religious, political and welfare party with its leadership committed to make Pakistan a welfare state where all citizens be provided their rights without differences of faith and societal status. He announced that the council will participate in next general elections, requesting religious scholars to come forward to steer out the country from confronting challenges. He said that Muslim awareness campaign was going on successfully in the country from November 19. Its cause, he added, was to educate common people against the menaces of extremism, terrorism and sectarian violence. The 2nd World Message of Islam Conference will also be held on 1st March 2017 in Islamabad under PUC banner. The PUC, on occasion, adopted a resolution denouncing criticism by US state department relating action against Ahmedia Centre, which was made in connection of National Action Plan.

The resolution stated that criticism of US state department on Pakistan’s action against Ahmedia in connection of NAP was tantamount to interference in internal affairs of the country.
