The Himalayan glaciers including Siachen - which is now the highest battlefield in the world - are considered the largest storages of water outside the polar ice caps, and feed seven great Asian rivers. Prominent, recognized organizations working in the arena of politics, environment, and climate change observe that the Siachen glacier is melting at an unprecedented rate due to deployment of troops and establishment of permanent cantonments on its surface. The Nobel Prize-winning documentary by former Vice President of United States, Al-Gore, cautions the world to save humanity from drifting towards such an imminent disaster. Siachen is melting due to India illegally occupying it and Pakistan being forced to defend it. The world has to take notice and urge India and Pakistan to withdraw their troops and save the world from an otherwise imminent disaster. -F.Z. KHAN, Islamabad, via e-mail, January 27.
