KARACHI - ANISUDDIN KHAN: Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) won the National Hockey Championship for the 26th time by defeating strong opponents Wapda 4-3 on a golden goal in the final here on Saturday at Hockey Club of Pakistan Stadium.

Muzammil Bhatti scored the honour winning goal in the extra sudden death time after teams had tied three all in the regulation time.

The highlight of the final was the hat trick from PIA’s Kashif Ali who got three in a row all from penalty corners in 26th, 52nd and 63rd minute.

Wapda, which had topped the points table, could not retain their form the had shown in the league round. They got their goals through Waseem Ahmed (39th minute) and Aleem Bilal (55th and 64th minutes). Sui Southern Gas clinched the third position in the 10-team championship by defeating a strong Army side 3-2.

Shabbir Ahmed scored all the three winning goals for SSGC. M Imran and Abdul Jabbar netted for soldiers who were favourites to take third place.

HBL earned fair play trophy. PHF secretary Asif Bajwa was chief guest at the occasion and distributed shields and trophies among the winners.
