ISLAMABAD - Former Pakistan cricket team chief selector and head coach Mohsin Hassan Khan has expressed his utter disappointment over pathetic team selection for the Asia Cup and World Twenty20.

Talking to The Nation, Mohsin demanded action against the team management, chief selector and coaches, who flopped miserably. “If players are held accountable for poor performances, why not an action is taken against those, who are mainly responsible for selecting below average side. I am astonished to see five uncapped players inducted by the chief selector for such high-profile events.”

He said Ahmed Shahzad’s confidence was shattered and he was put under enormous pressure. “No one could expect such pathetic selection which also indicates that chief selector Haroon Rasheed is completely powerless. Khurram Shahzad never played T20 International before and after the seven years gap, he was inducted in the squad, which means they want to destroy his confidence and career. M Rizwan’s omission from the squad also surprised me a lot. How on earth such a complete package player could be ignored from playing in the format best suited to him. He is a complete player as he is top class fielder and clever batsman, so Pakistan team will badly miss his services,” he added.

Mohsin said he was not against induction of youngsters, but the inclusion of such a great number of young players for such mega events was hard to swallow. “M Nawaz, Rumman Raees, Khurram Manzoor should have been given chance against England in UAE or New Zealand, so that they might attain much-needed confidence. Although Kamran Akmal deserves to be included in the national squad, yet Asia Cup and World T20 were not the platforms, where Kamran should have been unleashed.”

Mohsin said non-professionals had destroyed Pakistan cricket. “Unfortunately, there is no one who may seek explanation from the PCB and coaching staff, who completely failed in producing satisfactory results even against ordinary teams. The pathetic team selection is also the main reason behind Pakistan cricket’s decline as the national team is nowhere in ODI and T20 ICC rankings. They are almost rock bottom and no one else but the PCB’s wrong policies and favouritism are mainly behind this persistent decline.”

M Irfan was not considered for T20 Internationals against New Zealand due to fitness issues and was selected in ODIs, where he had to bowl 10 overs and to field for 40 overs. He was badly misused and same is continued with him unabated. The selectors have also destroyed careers of Junaid Khan, who was treated roughly. Same is the case with Umar Gul, who was never utilised properly in recent times. Has he given fair chances, he could be the main stay of Pakistan bowling.

He added that Sohail Tanveer should have been in the side, as he was highly experienced and had the vast knowledge of playing at almost all the top professional leagues of the world. “I am also disappointed to see disrespectful treatment rendered to Zulfiqar Babar, who had performed reasonably well after Abdul Rehman. He should have been given chance due to his experience and bowling ability in depth overs. Had he given chance, he could have proven quite handy for green caps.” “I demand across the board accountability for all the officials. The players always end up at receiving end, then why not the persons who are solely responsible for inflicting a huge damage on national cause. The time is ripe when the PCB patron should wake up and stop these incompetent persons from further devastating Pakistan cricket,” Mohsin demanded.
